He stops by Natalya’s office window. “Have you heard anything about Marfa Borisova?”

“Actually I went by the hospital this morning.”

“How is she?”

“The same. She still can’t talk. Her doctor thinks she may have had more than one stroke. He says now it’s basically a matter of waiting to see if her brain will heal itself.”

Waiting. For Elena to be found; for his mother’s condition to further manifest itself; for Semyon’s problems to go away. Now they must wait for Marfa Borisova’s fate to be settled.

“How long did they let you stay?”

“For a few minutes. I don’t think she knew I was there. They have her in one of the larger wards. I had to practically shout at her, it was so noisy.” Natalya shakes her head. “Anyway, I told her you were looking after her dog for the time being. Just in case.”

“In case what?”

“In case she could hear me. In case she was worried.”
